About the Building Department
The New York State Fire Prevention and Building Codes govern construction in the property that are regulated by this code require a building permit. Examples of items requiring a permit:
• New residences
• Garages and additions to residence
• Change in basement or attic into living space
• Storage building over 144 sq. ft. (exemption: mobile
home parks)
• Pools above and in-ground, hot tubs (more than 24”
deep)
• Septic and Sewer hook-ups
• Wood Stoves, Fireplaces, gas conversions, etc.
• Decks

plan showing location of such, with distances to
property lines
• Building Plans / stamped by Engineer or Architect if
it is a two-story or on existing foundation
• Pools Above and In-ground showing location of pool,
size and measurements to house and property line.
• An approved building lot
• Plot-plan showing location of building, driveway, well
and septic (if required)
• Two sets of stamped building plans / stamped by an
Engineer or Architect

• Copy of your builder’s insurance certificate and workers comp with the Town named as additional insured

The Building Department is Responsible for:
Inspections of Industrial and Commercial
Buildings, multiple dwellings and place of public
assembly for fire safety compliance with New York State
Uniform Code. Set Occupancy loads, inspects heat
producing equipment, fireplaces, woodstoves, pellet
stoves, sprinkler systems, and above and below ground
storage tanks of combustible and flammable liquids.
Respond to structure fires and other emergency
situations when called by the local fire department.
Responsible for the Town’s Emergency Management Plan
under the direction of Town Board Liaison.
Development: Liaison for Emergency Services.
